My Roswell Marathon
Late last week my partner and I finished up our Roswell marathon. We had purchased for our DVD collection all three seasons of the Roswell TV series, which originally aired from 1999 to 2002.
Oddly enough, even though we had cable and satellite TV during those years we hadn’t seen this interesting series. I’m not sure why that is… Oh well, we’ve finally watched it from beginning to end. Yeah, I’m exhausted!
To get you up to speed, if you haven’t had the chance to watch Roswell or if you need a refresher, Roswell was a teen science-fiction series, kind of along the same lines as Buffy and Angel. Lots of teen / young adult angst, dark themes, and some good stories along the way. In Roswell’s case it featured a group of alien teenagers trying to sort out their identities with a little help (when they’d allow it) from their human friends.
Personally, I thought that season one was the best all around. Season 2 was alright and it had some really good episodes but it seemed to lack the drive of the first season. Every now and then though you’d feel the show get a kick in the pants from Jonathan Frakes who was one of the executive producers and a director in a number of the episodes.
Actually, it was kind of funny, every now and then Jonathan Frakes would also do these cameos… As for season three, well… I was glad when it was over. There were a few good episodes in the last season but the spark was definately wanning in my opinion.
One of the things that I thought was neat and facinating was the amount of UFO lore and specifically, Roswell UFO lore that they managed to pack in throughout the entire series. It really brought these stories to life.
Overall though, I thought Roswell was a pretty good TV series and really enjoyed it.
