Mini Review of Memoirs of a Monster Hunter
One of the books that I got myself for Christmas was Nick Redfern’s ‘Memoirs of a Monster Hunter; A Five-Year Journey in Search of the Unknown’. It was the night before Christmas Eve and this book actually wasn’t on my shopping list that day, I was searching for some other books, but the title jumped out at me and when I saw the name of the author I immediately snatched it up so that no one else could buy it.
Strangely enough, I had been at Nick Redfern and Greg Bishop’s blog that very day. In fact, I had just recently ‘discovered’ their blog. So, this was good timing I thought, and I felt, that if nothing else I would probably get a little better acquainted with Nick Redfern, or at least his writing.
I hate to be a complainer but I do have a complaint about this book. When I started reading it I was actually in the middle of reading one of the Dune books; unfortunately the Dune book had to be put on hold while I finished devouring Memoirs of a Monster Hunter. Nick’s introduction to this fascinating peek into his life totally grabbed me and wouldn’t let me go until I had finished reading it.
Maybe I’m not reading the right things but I actually had no idea that real life stories of strange and unusual adventures could actually be as entertaining as Nick retells them. Actually, I guess, ‘adventures’ is the key word here; because adventures are supposed to be interesting and thrilling.
Nick’s hunts for the Chupacabras, Bigfoot, and the Goat-Man; encounters with spectral animals, ghost lights and an unusual cast of characters that he meets throughout his travels were all fascinating to say the least. I don’t think I encountered a single dull moment. In addition to being an entertaining book to read, ‘Memoirs of a Monster Hunter’ also gave me quite a lot to think about.
Now that I’ve been introduced to the fascinating world of Nick Redfern I’ve got to check out his other books as I get the feeling that I’ve been missing out on some very good reading.
