Review of the History Channel’s Version of UFO Hunters
Over the weekend, I watched The History Channel’s premiere episode of their new series, UFO HUNTERS.
The show is actually on Wednesday’s at 10:00pm ET/PT but I don’t have cable or satellite TV anymore; however the History Channel was kind enough to send me a DVD of the first episode. This week they’ll be on episode three.
As to be expected with a show like this, there’s already been quite a bit of buzz, both good and bad. I tried ignoring it all so that when I watched it I would have as unbiased opinion of it as possible. Pretty hard to do when you tend to read quite a few UFO type blogs. Nevertheless, I pretty much ignored what everyone else was saying about it and sat down to watch it on my own terms. I should also mention that I haven’t seen the competing show of the same name that’s being shown on The Sci-Fi Channel, so I wasn’t able to compare the two.
So, let’s get to the point – I liked the first episode of the History Channel’s version of UFO Hunters.
The synopsis:
The premiere episode of the new HD series UFO HUNTERS examines an incident that took place two weeks before the now-famous report of a UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico. UFO HUNTERS: THE UFO BEFORE ROSWELL travels back to June 21st, 1947, when Harold Dahl was boating with crew and dog off the coast of Maury Island, Washington, in Puget Sound. They noticed several odd-shaped aircraft dotting the sky. One suddenly began spewing white-hot fragments over the water and onto the beach. The fiery falling debris killed Dahl’s dog and broke his son’s arm. He told the harbor patrol, who in turn reported the incident to the military.
A few weeks later, two Air Force intelligence officers from Hamilton Field, California arrived in Tacoma. After conducting interviews, and collecting most of the remaining wreckage, the officers departed McChord Field in the early hours of August 1st. Shortly afterward, the airplane lost communication, and people reported seeing flames in the sky. Two people died in the crash, two others made their way through the darkness to a farmhouse. UFO HUNTERS has located the crash scene and along with an archeologist, comb the debris field, gathering and analyzing the evidence.
What I thought about it:
Like I said, I liked this episode; it was decent enough for what it is. The show is typical of similar mystery types of TV shows. Although, I will say, I’m not a huge fan of this type of format where there is endless repetition after the commercial break of points that have already been made. Still, producers and editors aren’t going to deviate far from what they consider ‘winning formulas’.
Like other shows of this genre, it presents more questions and more mysteries than answers. On the one hand, one would like a few more answers, but on the other hand, these types of shows are really only meant to get the eyeballs in so that the sponsors get more bang for their ad buck. Oh yes, and to entertain us all along the way. And it was indeed entertaining.
So yes, if you’ve got the History Channel in your lineup and you’re looking for an entertaining show about UFO’s to watch, then UFO Hunters is a pretty good choice to check out.
