Time Machines and Time Ships
My post on ‘War of the Worlds’, reminded me of the H.G. Wells inspired book that Stephen Baxter wrote: ‘The Time Ships’, and that I had read recently.
It’s been quite some time since I’ve read H.G. Wells’ classic, The Time Machine. But when I was going through my bookshelf recently I noticed that I not only still had a copy of it but I also have the authorized sequel to it, ‘The Time Ships’.
The basic premise of this novel is that The Time Traveler, driven by his failure to save Weena from the Morlocks, sets off again for the far future. But there’s a problem or two; the future has changed due to his previous adventure and every time he gets into his time machine the future changes yet again. It doesn’t stop there though because the British and German governments are messing around with time travel too.
It’s an epic adventure through time, set mainly in Britain during various time periods including to the depths of the universe to the very beginning of time. The story explores the perils of time travel and the consequences of time travel.
I found ‘The Time Ships’ to be both a highly fascinating and enjoyable story to read.
