Much Ado About Blobsters

When I was in Nova Scotia recently I happened to pick up a brochure for the various museums in Nova Scotia. In it, I happened to notice an event advertised that the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic had a program titled: Sea Monsters!

Unfortunately for me I was on my way home and couldn’t make it to the event. If you’re in the Halifax area, I notice though that the ‘Sea Monsters!’ program has been held over until April 27th.

I thought that the program would probably be interesting; but what really intrigued me was the reference to ‘blobsters’.

I had never heard of a blobster, although it conjured up images of great huge mutant Atlantic lobsters in my mind. In any event, I made a note to see what I could find out about this mysterious creature when I got home.

As it turns out, so far anyway, the results are very slim indeed. Most of the mentions to ‘blobsters’ that I’ve been able to find are all notices for the ‘Sea Monsters!’ program/event.

However, I did find these references over at Mystery Mag: The Newfoundland Blobster 2001. Turns out the Newfoundland Blobster could be a Basking Shark.

Sounds like to me that the Blobster was a short lived tale that the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic decided to resurrect. Oh well, I thought there might be something more to post about.
