Monsters from the Deep!

Yesterday, as I passed the newsstand I happened to see a picture of some sort of sea monster that gave me a start…

I didn’t buy the paper, but I did go online to see if I could find it and the article.

Turns out the photo was of a two metre long, Pacific longnose lancetfish that had washed up on a local beach. It’s a pretty prehistoric-looking fish that is normally found about 1.8 kilometers underwater. Link to the story: Toothy creatures surface from deep Island waters.

In a related news story, Nightmarish packs of rapacious giant devil squid are hunting off the B.C. coast.

Humboldt squid, called diablos rojos or red devils in Mexico used to be a rarity in BC waters; not anymore…

I knew there was a reason why I don’t go fishing anymore… ;)
