The Vinland Mystery Documentary
I wish my teacher and our history class had seen The Vinland Mystery when I presented my report on early explorations of North America. (That was more than a few years ago…) Perhaps then, my report wouldn’t have been considered so controversial.
They were all still thinking about how Christopher Columbus was the first white person to discover North America. The fact that various cultures and civilizations of various indigenous peoples had long discovered this continent was a little harder to ignore but it was a proven fact that Columbus was the great white discoverer…Oddly enough, even my teacher hadn’t heard of L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, which was discovered in 1960 and became a World Heritage Centre in 1978. I think in the end he conceded that I was right and gave me a decent grade for the report. (I did have lots of documentation.)
In any event, here’s a documentary from The NFB on it:
