Strange Wartime Stories

Wars produce their fair share of strange events, phenomenon and stories. The explanations and the sources of these stories are just as varied as during peace time. Here’s a few events and stories from WWI and WWII that have always intrigued me.

WWI Legends:

- The Angels of Mons is a popular legend about a group of angels who supposedly protected members of the British army in the Battle of Mons. The legend came about in part due to Arthur Machen’s story, The Angels of Mons – The Bowmen and Other Legends of the War.

- A related legend: The Hound of Mons — A strange horror story from the battlefields of World War I, when a terrible devil-dog was said to haunt the allied trenches.

WWII Stories:

- Live Science: World War II’s Gibralter monkey mystery solved.

- Foo fighters — The term “foo fighter” was used by Allied aircraft pilots in World War II to describe various UFOs or mysterious aerial phenomena seen in all theaters of operation.
